More Details About the Dyalpur Meteorite
The Dyalpur meteorite was discovered in 1872. It was recovered in Sultanpur, Sultanpur, Uttar Pradesh, India (26.25, 82.0). It has a mass of 300 grams.
Dyalpur is considered a “Valid” meteorite. “Valid” meteorites are typical meteorites with average weathering, while “relict” meteorites are those that have been extremely altered, either due to weathering over time or human intervention.
Dyalpur’s official classification is Ureilite. A “Ureilite” is a type of stony meteorite that belongs to the ureilite group. These meteorites are unique because they are ultramafic and contain interstitial carbon in the form of graphite or diamond. Most ureilites consist of olivine and pigeonite, but some may have different pyroxenes, and a small portion are polymict breccias, which means they contain additional feldspathic material along with typical ureilitic components.
The Dyalpur meteorite is a “fall” meteorite. Meteorites are classified as “falls” if they were observed falling and recovered, while “finds” are those discovered later, often weathered by longer exposure to Earth’s environment and without a record of being seen as they fell.
