L(?)3 Meteorite Classification

Class Description

The classification “L(?)3” refers to a meteorite that may belong to the ordinary chondrite group, possibly the L group, and it is of petrologic type 3. Ordinary chondrites are characterized by having a significant number of chondrules and low levels of aqueous alteration, and the L group specifically has moderate-sized chondrules and oxygen isotope compositions intermediate between other ordinary chondrite groups. This meteorite type is at a petrologic stage where it has abundant chondrules and minimal alteration, with some low-Ca pyroxene grains exhibiting certain characteristics.
