EL6 Meteorite Classification

Class Description

The “EL6” classification is given to an enstatite chondrite within the low-iron EL group, identified as petrologic type 6, which signifies a high level of metamorphic alteration without melting. These meteorites feature moderately large chondrules, a significant presence of silicon-bearing metal, and a distinct mineral composition, undergoing transformations that include uniform mineral composition, conversion of specific pyroxenes, enlargement of secondary minerals like feldspar, and a blurring of many chondrule outlines.
